What is the difference between a moonstone and an opal?

I by the skin of one's teeth found this really beautiful ring in my mom's house but the store clerk wasn't categorically sure what type of stone the ring really was. She said it was either a moonstone or an opal but since the bearing is pretty old it is hard to tell. Thank

They're unusual stones and they look different. Here are some images.

I think the trust in clerk just wasn't very knowledgeable. Try asking a out-and-out jeweler if you still don't know after you look at these pictures.
